Georgian Bay and the Bay of Fundy

Earlier in the summer, I did a kayak trip north of Parry Sound with some friends. Late in the day, the sun broke through the cloud for a few minutes, bathing the Painted Rocks (Charles Inlet) in golden light. I ran around quicly snapping a few shots before it was gone. See below:
On another kayak trip, this time to Sans Souci near Parry Sound, I caught this image right at sunset. When the sky is clear, begin shooting into the sun when it is a thumb's-width, at arm's length above the horizon. This will yield the best results without blowing out the sky. In this shot, I also had to brighten the foreground using Fill Light in Lightroom.

Stopping at Riviere du Loup, I caught this image with the late day sun reflecting off the bow of this bateau on the banks of the St. Lawrence River.

At Cape Blomidon, Nova Scotia, I found these great sandstone sculptures reminiscent of Arizona. I was happy to shoot these in nice light and add them to my collection.  This, I am sure, is a little known location. I had to ask a farmer's permission to cross his land to get to them. I only noticed them while admiring the view from a high overlook in the distance.

While camped in the area I had this magnificent view over the Bay of Fundy. This is a 6 shot panorama:

I discovered the sandstone formations while admiring this view from The Overlook at Cape Blomidon:

More Summer Shots

As mentioned in my previous blog, after the sun had set, some colourful light broke through the clouds, enabling me to capture the following shot

After the sun had set, I went over to the Cove proper and shot a number of 4 minute exposures. The effect of the tide is evident in the motion of one of the boats and in the smoothness of the water.

Earlier in the trip, I took a shot of the Riviere du Loup skyline from the ferry dock.

A footbridge across a brook leading to the tidal flats of the Bay of Fundy near Blomidon, Nova Scotia.

Just a quick shot I took in Florida in March at the Beachhouse Lodge in Bokeelia.

Summer Highlights

I thought I'd take some time this evening to post some shots from the summer of 2010.

I visited Peggy's Cove with hopes of getting some dramatic photos of this world-famous lighthouse. It was a very overcast day with very little prospect for good lighting conditions. I took several shots trying to get flowers in the foreground to add colour but the overall scenes were just too grey. I went to the harbour after the sun  had set and took some shots of boats and fishing shacks under the lights while there was still some colour in the sky. After I finished there, I thought I'd make one more stop at the lighthouse to see what I could do with the remaining light. The resulting image was a ten minute exposure and captured some of the last colours remaining in the sky. I was very happy with the result. There are a couple of ghosted human images just to the right of the lighthouse, which I feel add to the mystique of the image.
